Open Rails Origins - 18AL Board Game

Open Rails Origins - 18AL is a hybrid of several game systems, most notable 18XX, Age of Steam and Chicago Express as well as some other ideas that I've been kicking around for a while.  I'm holding out hope that the original Open Rails will be picked up by a publisher at some point, but this game is meant to be a gentle introduction to the system. The game is playable for one to three players.  The one player version takes about 20 minutes to play after the initial pass through the rules.  Experienced players should be able to get through the two and three player versions of the game in 60-90 minutes.

Pictures forthcoming, however, for now, here are the files, in time for Christmas!

This game is available for free as a print and play game.  It can be prionted out on 8-1/2 x 11 sheets of paper and is designed for 8 x 10 sheets.  Other items you will need in addition to printing are:

  • 16 cubes or small markers (1 cm or less) in red, green, yellow, blue and purple.
  • 12-13 small discs, (2 cm or less), preferably translucent.
  • Poker chips in $1, $5, $10 and a few $50 denominations OR paper money (Monopoly works).

Other materials that may help in making your own game would include:

  • Straight edge paper cutter.
  • Rounded corner paper cutter.

Other maps and expansions are slated for the beginning of 2010!

This game is currently not for sale, however, I may change my mind.  Email me if you're interested in a copy.
