Quick post that my Pocket Civ inspired expansion game design has played pretty well on its own. It is currently in transparent-sheet and marker mode, but development moved pretty quickly. There are some loose ends and a couple of the more ambitious portions had to be trimmed (variable commodities based on deliveries being the biggie, but it was too big of a pain in the ass). However, adding in a few more events, adding the ability to take loans and coming up with neat ways of adding to the networks in addition to link scoring at the end have made a better game.
I will publish the paper-and-marker version soon once I get the rules written up. I will add pieces for existing Pocket-Civ sets as well. Finally, I will have some scenarios that I will generate as well for the Western USA, Northeast USA and France.
Trying to wrap my head around a 2 player version and I think it will work.
